Secrets to Happiness # 3: Confidence Breeds Success

David-into-officea.jpg

As we talked about before, happiness happens only by accomplishing internal goals.

In order to achieve your internal goals, you have to have confidence - confidence in yourself and confidence of others.

Your opinion of yourself can be high or low and your opinion of others might also be high or low.

When it comes to confidence there are 4 different levels, of which only one provides true happiness:

1.  High opinion of yourself and a low opinion of others:

People who tend to see themselves on a high level of opinion and see other people on a low one are usually arrogant - they don't understand that having a high opinion of others doesn't lower the opinion of themselves. This is the type of person who feels they need to be better than others in order to boost his/her own confidence, and as a result are never happy, since there is always somebody else who they have to compete against.

2.   Low opinion in yourself and a high opinion of others:

Then there are those who have a high opinion of others, but a low opinion of themselves. They tend to beat themselves up and are therefore insecure. Doesn't matter how well you do, there is always somebody else who is doing better than you.

3.  Low opinion of yourself and a low opinion of others:

People who have no high opinion of anyone including themselves are usually cynical. They tend to see problems everywhere and in every corner. Being cynical is the complete opposite of confidence.

And, finally...

4. High opinion of themselves and high opinion of others:

This is the true definition of confidence. People who tend to have a high opinion of themselves and others are usually secure, positive and therefore, happy.

Secrets to Happiness # 2: Internal, Fulfilling Goals

dscn0798.jpg

Some weeks ago we wrote an article that said that the No. 1 Secret for being happy is to be happy first and THEN be successful; not the other way around.

Today we’ll write about the Secret No. 2:

No matter how many external goals you achieve, happiness comes only by accomplishing internal ones.

External goals become unlimited; people tend to set goals, and once accomplished, they set new goals -nothing wrong with it except for the fact that, by itself, it does not translate into happiness. The reason it never translates into happiness is due to the fact that we expect other people’s approval.

You might be working in a well-paid job with a great title but not be happy about it since it does not fulfill your inner self.

When it comes to goals, internal goals are those set with the “DO IT FOR YOU” concept in mind,  not for competition purposes.
You are doing it because you want to, because you enjoy it, and because it provides meaning to your life and to those people who are part of it.

You are not expecting approval or reward; you are just enjoying the ride and increasing your confidence.

Train Your Mental Toughness #3/4: Choose your Path

fotolia_72668913_xs.jpg

Without clarity and self-awareness, your inner compass will be pointing other people’s North, you’d find yourself chasing goals not your own… as the saying goes, people may spend their whole lives climbing the ladder of success only to find, once they reach the top, that the ladder was leaning against the wrong wall… You don’t want to let that happen to you.

I once read about a college student at Ohio State, who was supposed to become a veterinarian because she loved animals; but she actually loved being with them rather than studying them or treating them… and this was only after two whole years of anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry.
So, she needed to look into her heart and find her inner guidance… When was she the happiest?  And it was always when she was involved in leadership; so, in order to get a major in leadership, she took courses in psychology, persuasion, journalism, speech, etc. She graduated with a leadership degree at age 26 and ended up teaching at the Pentagon.
Today she’s a very successful woman, and she is fulfilled and happy.

The only way to your path is through self-awareness. Tune in to your real self and develop skills like discipline, dedication and a capacity for high performance.

The path of your heart will be authentic to your true self, and aligned with your purpose; not to what others think is best for you.

This is the path to the real YOU.
Now it’s up to you to find it.

Next week we will cover the final aspect to achieve Mental Toughness: Find a healthy lifestyle, and surround yourself with a supportive environment

Until then, stay strong!
